Herd History

The origin of the herd began when the Laxfield Herd was established by David Smith in the Suffolk village of Laxfield in 1972 with the purchase of five cows from Commander Burnell-Nugent. The renowned sire Rowington Valerian was purchased soon after from Mr M.D Powell of Glynclawdd Herefords.  The herd relocated to West Wales in 1977.  Many of the present Butley herd descend from the Laxfield herd which has been successfully developed by Charles Smith and can now be found again on Suffolk soil at Banters Barn Farm at Boyton.  Further females were added from the Eden Park and Ingon herds.
